PHILADELPHIA – Members of the largest union at The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News have voted to postpone a $25-a-week raise.
The Newspaper Guild of Greater Philadelphia agreed to do so to help Philadelphia Media Holdings cut $10 million in costs by the end of the year. The raise will not take effect until Aug. 1, 2009, a month before the contract expires. The Guild represents 655 workers, mostly journalists and advertising sales representatives.
Tuesday's 197-79 vote by the Guild was a contrast to the 38-32 vote by printing press operators the same day to reject a similar request. Mailers and drivers have previously agreed to defer raises.
