SAN DIEGO COUNTY FAIR
In the ribbons: Mary Shoger

UNION-TRIBUNE

June 24, 2008

Judges' choice: The winner of the Rene Bohn Award is Mary Shoger of Oceanside, for her black and red heart scarf. The Bohn award is given for superior craftsmanship.

Background: The neck scarf is made of thread so it is very fine. It took about four months to weave on an eight-harness loom. Shoger considers the win beginner's luck because this was her first fair entry. She never considered her work good enough to give as gifts, but now she is gearing up for Christmas.

How she got started: Shoger, 61, was encouraged to take weaving classes by her sister about six years ago. She bought several looms and still finds the art fascinating and the designs that can be made on looms amazing.

Comment: “I am an accountant in my day job. I find weaving very relaxing after a day at work. It is very calming.”

Tip to learn more: Take weaving classes.
