CHP station resolution may be just too obvious

I know just what you're going to say: Who cares?

A few million bucks is a drop of ink in the Golden State's Red Sea.

More Logan Jenkins Columns

Closing wallets now worsens the big picture: Remember when President Bush called upon Americans to go shopping in the aftermath of 9/11? He was ridiculed as a superficial cheerleader, but in retrospect, it wasn't such a dumb prescription for a country paralyzed by fear.

New dam notion stirs memories of old film: A recent news story introduced a novel solution to nearly 60 years of hand-wringing over the Santa Margarita River.

Diaz's win a milestone that bodes well for city: Barack Obama made American history Tuesday night. In Escondido, Olga Diaz made her own brand of history, finishing ahead of incumbent Councilman Ed Gallo.

To-do list: Vote, relax with never-do-again list: This fine November morning, I know how Marco Polo must have felt when he was but a day's ride from Kublai Khan's court.

High beam shines on 3 political lowlights: The final days of a political campaign are much like an exorcism. Evil spirits fly out of the body politic at such a furious rate that it can make the head spin. Consider three lowlights of the projectile politicking in North County:

A couple of reasons to oppose Prop. 8: Proposition 8 should de defeated for two good reasons. Colleen and Susan.

'People's Lawyer' facing fateful election week: Predicting where Michael Aguirre truly belongs in San Diego's zeitgeist is no mean feat.

Oceanside candidate sticks it to sign thieves: We're on the homestretch – thank God! – and the track is lined with campaign signs, hit pieces and press coups. For example:

Old friend got sage advice on election: More than a year and a half ago, I had breakfast with John DeBlanc, an old friend of my late father's and, for the last dozen years, a valued friend and reader of mine.

All went up in smoke, but not the memories: We're sitting on rocks the size of beach balls, Tarra Judson Stariell and I, up on her hill that a year ago had a wooden cross on top of it.

Column's election prediction holds up: On Jan. 3, the morning before the Iowa primary caucus, the following new year's prediction appeared in this column:

October's devil winds rekindling deep fears: In October, San Diego County's cruelest month, bone-dry Santa Ana winds attack the sinuses and unlock the box in the brain where year-old nightmares are stored.

Anti-gerrymandering bid heartens craggy pol: Dylan Thomas, the alcoholic Welsh poet, made a memorable point – alas, with too many pints – about old men.

Bone, er, bouquet thrown to watchdogs: A bouquet – the Rural Watchdogs award – to Olivenhain activists for keeping a sharp eye on the “how” as well as the “what” of an 8.4-acre mixed-use development at the corner of Rancho Santa Fe Road and Encinitas Boulevard.

Connection missed for would-be train rider: On the last day of September, Kate Callen mailed a letter to Ed Gallo, the Escondido councilman who doubles as board chairman of the North County Transit District.

Afraid of the dark? Not if you're SDG&E: Talk about a game-changer on the grid. When the threat of fire reaches bright red, SDG&E will launch a pre-emptive retreat from the backcountry.

Proposed landfill seen at standstill over water: Chances are, you've sort of had it with Gregory Canyon, the Fallbrook-area dump in the gummed-up works for 20 years.

Ringside view of a mayoral matchup: Yesterday morning, I exited state Route 78 and drove north on El Camino Real toward KOCT, Oceanside's TV station.

Carlsbad council candidate keeps on truckin': “Here's an economics exam and a loyalty oath,” Glenn R. Bernard, Carlsbad council candidate, said at the conclusion of a forum last week.

Pro-growth gets boost from council in Vista: A bouquet – the Big Dreams Big Works award – to the Vista City Council for tamping down, and then transcending, past public opposition to (almost) doubling down on redevelopment, the big weapon in a city's pro-growth arsenal.

Hooters ad brings in profit, problems: Before we peruse the half-page high-school newspaper ad featuring that features a Hooters Girl with pom-poms, let's stipulate to this:

Democrats really do exist in Rancho Santa Fe: Driving to the maiden meeting of the Rancho Santa Fe Democratic Club, the radio was tuned to Roger Hedgecock.

Road name makeover for Vista is long due: It's going to cost Vista something in the neighborhood of 200 grand to right an old street crime.

Encinitas hopefuls all over the map: Encinitas' schizoid civic personality is split five ways. With three multi-term incumbents and seven worthy challengers running for three City Council seats, the election movie should be called “The Five Faces of Eden: Leucadia, Cardiff, Olivenhain, and New and Old Encinitas.”
