
Barrett: Closed to fishing, but open to waterfowl hunting on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The 54 hunters on Saturday reported 168 ducks, with mostly ruddys taken (58). Chollas: Open daily to youngsters 15 and under. San Diego Fly Fishers sponsors a Lend-A-Rod program on Sundays from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., and it includes free bait and tackle and fishing tips.
Cuyamaca: Good trout fishing continues along with fair fishing for channel catfish. Ken Nelson, San Diego, 9-8 channel cat, marshmallow-worm, West Finger Jetty. Chris Liu, San Diego, 4-4 rainbow trout, Power Bait, T-Dock. Steve Kretz, La Mesa, 4-0 trout, night crawler, Dike. Stephen Chickus, Chula Vista, 3-11 trout, night crawler, Kitchen Cove. Kim Kesson, 2-11 trout, night crawler, bait below a bobber. Private boats now are allowed on the lake, but the boats must be sprayed for quagga mussels by a high-pressure heated wash prior to entering the lake. Cost is $10 for the spraying and it's good for multiple trips to Cuyamaca so long as the boat is not used in another reservoir in between visits. Open daily.
Diamond Valley Lake: Launch ramp is closed here until further notice. Bass fishing has been fair, with surface action on busting shad the best bet. Flukes in smoking shad have been the ticket. Other species have been slow, but trout fishing should pick up soon. Open daily.
Dixon: Open daily.
El Capitan: The 109 anglers checked reported 147 bass (all released), 15 crappie. Fall schedule with with Thursdays and Fridays open for fishing, general boating and water contact activities (water-skiing, wake-boarding, Jet Skiing, towing inflatables in the front bay only); Saturdays and Sundays open for fishing, boating and water contact activities (in both the front bay and North Arm); Mondays are open for fishing and general boating only. Rental boats are available on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. On Sundays they stop renting boats at 10 a.m. All persons entering reservoir property must purchase a day use permit.
Henshaw: Catfish action remains best here, but crappie being caught by anglers on the Fish-N-Float. Crappie are hitting night crawlers, and the fish are in the 1-to 2-pound range. Irene Whiteeagle, Lake Henshaw, 11 channel catfish, chicken livers, off the dock. Open daily.
Hodges: Pete Graves, Encinitas, 5.40 bass, topwater lure, Narrows. The 77 anglers checked reported 36 bass (all released), 1 crappie. The lake will be closed November, December and January. Open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.
Jennings: Supervising ranger Hugh Marx said the lake's resident bass have a secret inner clock that tells them rainbow trout are on their way. Bass love stocked trout, so this time of year, as the trout are stocked at more and more lakes, bass fishermen will use trout imitation swimbaits to fool them. Loveland: The 62 anglers reported 2 bass (released), 2 bluegill, 5 carp and 7 channel catfish, including an 11-2 catfish and two 7-pounders. Open daily to hike-in fishing only on a limited area of shoreline. No permits required. Fishing license is required.
Miramar: Open daily to fishing and boating. Pay fees at iron ranger or electronic pay station near the concession building.
Morena: Lake has been consistent of late in producing a big bass each week. Jack Reyes, Guatay, 8-0 bass, crawdads, North Boat Dock. Bluegill action fair for anglers using pieces of night crawlers. Catfish action is best right now, with the area below the cabins the most productive. Daniel Deems, Campo, 5-8 channel catfish, chicken liver, Cabin Cove. Open daily.
Murray: Open daily to fishing and boating. Pay fees at iron rangers near the abandoned concession building or at key access points.
Otay, Lower: The 233 anglers checked reported 17 bass kept (270 bass released), 431 bluegill, 32 channel catfish and 3 blue catfish. Michael Williams, National City, 93.40 blue catfish, mackerel, Harvey Arm. Williams also caught a 28.10-pound blue catfish. He released the bigger one. Lancelot Dixon, San Diego, 48.50 blue catfish, mackerel, Otay Arm. Open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday. Pay fees at iron rangers near the boat launch and abandoned concession building. Boats now available for rent.
Otay, Upper: The 12 anglers checked reported 23 bass (all released). Open Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday for fishing, sunrise to sunset. Upper Otay is a catch and release only fishery. Bait is not permitted, only artificial lures with barbless hooks. Boats are not permitted on Upper Otay, only shore fishing, waders and float tubes.
Poway: Open weekends only in October. Starting Nov. 5, stocked with rainbow trout and open Wednesday through Sunday. Lake's first trout stock will include 4,000 pounds. In order to prevent the introduction and infestation of quagga mussels, the following items are prohibited at Lake Poway: float tubes, private motors and anchors, live bait containers, fish finders, floating catch baskets, live bait from any source other than the Lake Poway concession, any items the staff considers to be potential contaminants.
Santee Lakes: Trout season opens Nov. 8 with tagged fish worth great prizes, including one fish worth a flat screen TV. All those who catch a trout 5 pounds or better are eligible for the season-end raffle for the TV. Greg Flores, Chula Vista, 3-0 channel catfish, night crawler, Lake 4. Sutherland: Closed to fishing, but open Thursdays and Sundays to waterfowl hunting. The 10 hunters reported five ducks – three mallards, 1 ring-necked and 1 gadwall. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Sweetwater: The 43 anglers checked reported one bass kept (22 bass released), 5 carp and 5 channel catfish. Open Saturday, Sunday and Monday to limited shoreline fishing only.
Wohlford: Trout don't arrive here until Dec. 13. The lake will be stocked with 4,500 pounds of trout. Fair fishing now for channel catfish and bass. Whopper Contest Leaders for October are: Jerry Harris, 1-9 crappie; Roy Hamind, 9-4 bass; Jack Ferguson, 12-12 catfish. Open weekends only until mid-December. Ban on private boats remains in place due to the threat of quagga mussels. Other banned equipment include canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, etc. Rental boats available. Open daily.

Pt. Loma Sportfishing, H&M Landing, Fisherman's Landing: 38 anglers, two half-day boats: 93 bonito, 13 sand bass, 79 rockfish, 3 sheephead, 1 ling cod, 1 sculpin, 1 mako shark. 45 anglers, two full-day boats: 105 albacore, 2 yellowtail, 2 bluefin, 25 skipjack.
Seaforth: 51 anglers, two half-day boats: 21 bonito, 1 calico bass, 14 sand bass, 24 rockfish, 4 whitefish, 4 sheephead, 8 sculpin, 25 mackerel.
Oceanside: 13 anglers, one half-day boat: 14 sand bass, 1 calico bass, 28 sculpin, 30 rockfish, 2 sheepshead, 2 bonito.
Red Rooster III: Returned from a five-day trip, fishing near San Pablo, the ridge and offshore. Captain Andy Cates reports limits of all species and 57 wahoo caught. First place: Rick Wonders, Coronado, 50 lb. wahoo; second place: Richard Hightower, La Mirada, 47.4 lb. wahoo; third place: Rex McDonald, Auburn, Wa., 46.9 lb wahoo. Trolling 50 lb. wahoo.
Noteworthy: Waterfowlers had excellent shooting Saturday at the Wister Unit of the Imperial Wildlife Area, but by Sunday, the ducks were gone. On Saturday, 364 hunters shot 1,172 ducks (mostly greenwing teal with 456) and one white-front goose. On Sunday the numbers dropped to 189 ducks and no geese for 146 hunters. The Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge also shot better on Saturday than it did on Sunday. The 52 hunters shot 259 ducks on Saturday, but the 23 hunters on Sunday managed just 31 ducks and one white-front goose.
Fire Season: The Forest Service has moved forest use restrictions from High to Very High, meaning more restrictions on forest use. Campfires are not allowed in certain campsites, the use of camp stoves is limited in some wilderness areas and Orosco Ridge is closed.
