OUTDOORS REPORT
Local bass club honors Van Wulven

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

October 21, 2008

Bill Van Wulven of Barnacle Bill's Bait and Tackle in Lemon Grove will be inducted into the San Diego Council of Bass Clubs' Bass Fishing Hall of Fame tonight during a dinner and ceremony at 6 at the La Mesa Recreation Center.

Early inductees such as Bill Wade, Orville P. Ball, Dr. David Jessop, Larry Bottroff and Jim Brown were honored as pioneers of the area's bass fishing community who made significant contributions to it. Others such as Kevin Mineo, Bob Cook and Paul Leader gained entrance for their efforts to keep bass fishing thriving here. Jim Putney, president of the Bass Council, said Van Wulven fits right in with that group.

“Bill epitomizes the qualities and skills that represent the best and highest ideals and standards of the San Diego Council of Bass Clubs,” Putney said.

Kelly Salmans of the Bass Council said the dinner ceremony is close to being a sellout. Ticket information: (619) 997-6698.

Notable

On the ocean front, albacore in the 8-to 25-pound class have arrived in a big way between 58 and 63 miles from San Diego. Chuck Taft of the Sea Adventure 80 out of H&M Landing reports there's about a 20 square-mile area with good sign of longfins.

Meantime, H&M Landing has dropped its fuel surcharge for anglers in the wake of falling fuel prices.

On the freshwater front, Lake Jennings opens stocked with rainbow trout Friday morning. The shipment of trout arrive from Mt. Lassen on Thursday morning at 8:30.

The county's deer season opens for rifle hunters Saturday, a half hour before sunrise. Hunters must have a D-16 tag to shoot a buck, forked horn or better. And doe hunters must have a special doe tag to shoot an antlerless deer.
