Three local high school players have been named to the American Volleyball Coaches Association's senior All-America team.
Otay Ranch's Youssif El-Rakabawy, a setter headed to the University of California San Diego, was joined on the 12-member squad by a pair of La Costa Canyon players, outside hitters Jack Mergenthaler and Beau Vandeweghe.
El-Rakabawy, the Mesa League Player of the Year, led the Mustangs to a league title and a No. 7 ranking in the San Diego Section.
Mergenthaler and Vandeweghe, members of the section Division I champion Mavericks, will play college volleyball at UCLA and Pepperdine, respectively.
The players also earned spots on the Union-Tribune All-Academic Team.
Frosh All-American
Torrey Pines High alum Jerrud Sabourin has been named a second-team freshman All-American by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Sabourin, who started 59 games at first base for the University of Indiana, hit .383 with 14 doubles, 53 RBI and five home runs.
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound left-hander attended the University of Arizona for one semester in an effort to make the team as a walk-on. When he didn't make the Wildcats roster, Sabourin transferred to Indiana, where he became the Hoosiers' second player to be named a freshman All-American.
Need gear?
After a successful collection of used baseball gear at a recent Padres game, Kids Gear for Baseball is looking for schools, organizations, community centers and youth baseball leagues in need of donated gloves, balls, bats and other equipment.
The local nonprofit organization is run by eight students from La Jolla High and The Bishop's School. For information, call (619) 985-5437.
Basketball tournament
The San Diego Classic high school girls basketball tournament is scheduled July 17-20.
Competition is expected to feature more than 300 teams in four divisions playing at sites across the region. The tournament, the largest of its kind in the nation, is in its 22nd year and includes many of the top teams in the West.
The girls must attend the high school they represent. There are no all-star or club teams entered.
The tournament championship games are set for the final day at the University of California San Diego's RIMAC Arena.

High school coaches and their athletes are not allowed contact during those two weeks.
The next step
Otay Ranch's Brittany Powell will continue her volleyball career at San Francisco State, the university announced.
Powell, a 6-foot-1 middle blocker who earned All-Mesa League honors, will join a Gators program that is being reinstated this fall. A Division II school, San Francisco State will play in the California Collegiate Athletic Association, which includes UCSD.
“Brittany is a motivated player who is always striving to get better,” Gators coach Michelle Patton said in a news release. “Offensively, she has the potential to be a force in the middle.
