EL CAJON – Santana High stole host El Cajon Valley's Oscar-themed homecoming game Friday night in the last minute, winning 33-27.
With 50 seconds left, sophomore quarterback Zach Breidt scrambled to his right and hit senior Travis Reynolds for the winning score.
“It's a stunner,” said senior tailback Thomas Szumpruch, who ran for 60 yards and a touchdown. “We got pumped up by the crowd and went in for a victory.”
There were five lead changes and the game wasn't settled until Santana senior Cory Hosford nabbed an interception with 13 seconds left. The Sultans (4-5, 1-2) then took a knee and celebrated their first Grossmont North League victory of the season.
“We played all four quarters and came through it,” Breidt said. “I had some mistakes in there and it got me down for a while, so I was glad to come back and win it.”
Breidt finished 9-for-23 with 161 passing yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions.
The victory kept alive the young Division IV team's chances to crack the postseason.
“Our schedule's going to look good, but it's going to be close,” Santana coach Dave Gross said.
The Sultans weren't the only playoff-minded team, though.
On the first play by the Braves (4-5, 0-3), quarterback Isaac Soliz found senior wideout Peter Alkass for an 80-yard touchdown. ECV led 13-10 at the half, hoping to break a four-game losing streak.
Soliz went 25-for-46 with 394 yards and two touchdowns, but threw four interceptions.
Both teams swapped leads after halftime, but the Braves seemed ready to pull ahead permanently in the fourth quarter. Backup quarterback Alex Hann had a 10-yard keeper for a touchdown in the early minutes to put his team up 27-17.
Santana chipped at the lead with a touchdown pass from Breidt to senior Kris Kimmel, then tied the game 27-27 with a 45-yard field goal from senior Josh Van De Vrugt.
