Ramona rides Morgan's three late TDs in 40-30 victory

SPECIAL TO THE UNION-TRIBUNE

November 8, 2008

It was senior night for the Westview High football team, but it was a junior for Ramona who shined with three touchdown runs in a 40-30 victory.

Ryan Morgan scored three touchdowns for Ramona on Friday night in the last 13:55 on runs of 10, 11 and 5 yards.

His second TD run made it 34-27 with 11:55 remaining and provided a lead that wouldn't be relinquished. Morgan finished with 163 yards on 25 attempts.

“Ryan has been out a month with a broken toe,” said Ramona coach Damon Baldwin. “It's great to have balance with Joey Dambrose and be able to go with the guy who is the hot runner.”

Dambrose pitched in with 101 yards and a touchdown on 17 attempts. His 16-yard run at 2:43 in the first quarter opened the scoring.

Ramona didn't look like the ninth-ranked team in the section when it trailed 27-20 at the half.

Westview got three touchdown connections (from 63, 93 and 21 yards) between quarterback Tommy Hansen and wide receiver Stephen Sousa in the first half. Sousa had single coverage before the break and finished with 193 yards on five catches.

“We were a victim of the big play early on with those three plays,” said Baldwin. “But we made some adjustments at the half where we focused on playing the pass.”

Ramona held Sousa to two catches for 16 yards in the second half. The Bulldogs also shut down Hansen in the second half, when he had 84 yards passing compared to 245 in the first half.

“We made adjustments to cover their receivers more,” said junior defensive back Seth Drake, who intercepted a pass in the second half. “We were focusing on the run and kind of ignoring the pass early on.”

Westview dropped to 7-2 overall and 3-2 in the Valley League. Ramona, which lost last week to Valley Center, improved to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the Valley League.

Ramona can win the Valley League next week at home against No. 1-ranked Oceanside, which beat Valley Center 49-21.
