Patriots rally by Hornets behind QB Farley, receiver Jones

SPECIAL TO THE UNION-TRIBUNE

November 8, 2008

In a back-and-forth contest with seven lead changes, Patrick Henry emerged from an 11-point halftime deficit to beat Lincoln 31-28 in an Eastern League matchup Friday night.

Quarterback Kevin Farley threw for four touchdowns and junior wide receiver Duante Jones caught four passes for 119 yards and two scores, all in the second half, for the Patriots.

Jones' touchdown catch with 10:26 left proved to be the game-winner. On fourth-and-10 from the Lincoln 31, Jones fought off a Hornets tackler, spun away from another and cut around a third. His catch and run closed out the scoring.

“That was supposed to be a fly route, but the corner was blocking where I wanted to go,” said Jones. “I broke it to the inside, made the catch and was fortunate to break the tackle and score.”

Patrick Henry (6-3, 2-2) had a chance to ice the game late. From the Lincoln 12, running back Bill Dabbert had a first down and broke free. He tried to stretch the ball across the goal line but was hit and fumbled out of the end zone for a touchback. That gave Lincoln a lifeline, but the Patriots defense held on four straight pass attempts and the offense took a knee to secure the win.

Coach Mike Williams said it wasn't how he likes to win, but he'll take it.

“Those kinds of things happen in high school football,” he said. “We've won some like that, too. But our defense really made big plays when we needed it.”

Williams was also impressed with Jones' effort.

“He was a little down in the first half because he didn't feel like he was getting the ball,” said Williams. “He just wants to make plays for us, and in the second half, they played a Cover 2. He was able to find some soft spots and really played well.

Lincoln (5-4, 0-4) quarterback Ronnie Yell tossed three touchdown passes, with Victor Dean catching two.
