Tritons eke out NCAA soccer win

Shelby Wong's goal with 6:44 left in the second overtime lifted the No. 3-seeded UCSD women's soccer team past No. 6 BYU-Hawaii 1-0 in the first round of the NCAA West Regional last night at Seattle Pacific.

“(Wong) kept her head about her and didn't panic,” Tritons coach Brian McManus said. “It was one of those games. It was the same thing when we played them over there (a 1-0 UCSD win last year).”

The Tritons (15-3-4) face No. 2 Seattle Pacific at 1 p.m. tomorrow.

Volleyball

Ali Troost had a match-high 17 kills but Saint Mary's upset No. 13 USD 25-22, 25-14, 21-25, 25-21 in WCC play at Jenny Craig Pavilion. Amy DeGroot added 13 kills for USD (19-4, 9-2). Jessica Nyrop had 46 assists and Andrea Csaszi 19 digs against the Gaels (19-6, 9-3) . . . No. 16 Colorado State swept visiting SDSU 25-18, 25-18, 25-17 in MWC action. Lauren Salisbury had 10 kills and Michelle Ferrer 14 digs against the Rams (21-3, 11-2). SDSU falls to 8-16, 5-9.
