Grier outlines USD hoop suspensions; guard Johnson added to list

UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

12:30 p.m. November 14, 2008

USD men's basketball coach Bill Grier has taken the “indefinite” out of suspensions to forwards Gyno Pomare and Clinton Houston and announced an additional suspension to guard Trumaine Johnson on the eve of the season-opening game at UNLV.

Pomare, a senior All-WCC selection, will sit out Saturday's UNLV game before being reinstated for the home opener on Tuesday against Nevada. Houston has been assessed a six-game suspension with reinstatement contingent on meeting certain, unspecified criteria set forth by Grier.

Pomare and Houston missed USD's exhibition game against Cal State Los Angeles last Saturday for what were described as separate violations of team rules.

Trumaine Johnson, who played in the exhibition but has been absent from practice this week, will be precluded from team activities until the Toreros return from the Paradise Jam Tournament in the U.S. Virgin Islands on Nov. 25 – effectively a five-game suspension. Grier said the suspension was for “behavior unbecoming a USD student athlete.”

“Obviously this puts us at a huge loss to start the season, and I can't express how disappointed I am,” Grier said. “It is very upsetting that it has come to this. But I have to look at the long-term good of this program in making decisions like this.”

In addition to the suspended players, USD on Saturday is likely to be without the services of junior guard De'Jon Jackson, who is still recovering from a knee injury incurred in the exhibition game.
